Author Interview – Calinda B

at 6:30 AM

Do you have to travel much concerning your book(s)? I travel in general and yes, it influences the books. I’m an avid scuba diver and travel to some very unique places to dive. Places and situations always factor in my stories.

What are your current writing projects now? As mentioned above, I’m writing The Beckoning of Broken Things. It starts in a mental hospital. That’s all I’m going to say at this moment. My lips are sealed.

Are you reading any interesting books at the moment? Tahereh Mafi’s Unravel Me. She’s a brilliant young writer and the story is intriguing.

Are there any new authors that have sparked your interest and why? Tahereh Mafi – she’s taken a chance with a writing style that includes strikeouts so that you get a glimpse into the character’s mind – what she really thinks and how she edits herself. In reading reviews, people either love that unique style or they despise it. This author also writes in a very vivid descriptive manner.

What contributes to making a writer successful? Writing! (kidding). I’d say taking a balanced approach to the slings and arrows that come your way. People read your books. They form opinions. My skin is definitely thicker since I started putting my writing out into the world. Some people are effusive with their praise. Some are just plain mean with criticism. You just have to nod your head, smile, thank everyone for the comments and just keep writing because you HAVE to keep writing. It’s food for the soul to be able to express yourself.

What do you do to unwind and relax? Scuba dive!

What dreams have been realized as a result of your writing? You know, for me, writing has been very healing. I’ve been able to come to terms with various parts of my life and integrate them into myself in a very healthy manner. I’ve become willing to take risks in my personal life, speaking out against injustices, not just rolling over and “taking it” when someone is unconscious in their actions or just plain mean. Life is too short and my life is too good to allow that.

If you could leave your readers with one bit of wisdom, what would you want it to be? Take risks, be yourself, learn from everything and get out there and live!
