Author Interview – Angela Brown

at 6:30 AM

Did writing this book teach you anything and what was it? Writing this book re-affirmed for me that anything is possible if you put your mind to it.

Do you intend to make writing a career? I’d love to! I’ll continue writing and working to publish (whether self-published, small press or traditionally), and I hope my readership grows so that I can one day – sooner than later – make writing my only daily work J

Have you ever had writer’s block? If so, what do you do about it? So far, I’ve been pretty lucky. I’ve only had brief bouts of writer’s block. When it happens, I turn to my daughter for a tickle-good-time-laugh, eat something deliciously chocolate, free write my swirling thoughts and end up with great ideas for moving beyond the block.

Can you share a little of your current work with us? Neverlove is a young adult novel with elements of paranormal, romance and action woven throughout. Two young people with new starts in life. Their new love caught in the crosshairs of love and duty, heaven and hell. It is the first novel in the Shadow Jumpers series.

How did you come up with the title? Both Abby and Basil come from homes where love was expressed in less than stellar ways. So it fit to title the novel Neverlove, for it was something they experienced first-hand. And leaving things to chance, both could be fated to a life of Neverlove.

Can you tell us about your main character? Abby is a beautiful seventeen year old girl with a heart and soul damaged by an absentee mother. With a father all too eager to be a presence in her bedroom, she finds death the only solution. But life has other plans, bringing her to V’Salicus Academy where she discovers so much more about herself than ever before.

Basil’s slip of the tongue brings him into servitude of the Devourer, the Master of Hell. After living a life of unrealistic expectations of perfection, he thinks he can handle the task, but falling in love with Abby makes him question his duty and whether he can stomach his loyalty to the devil.

How much of the book is realistic? There are fragments of realism to certain things experienced by Abby L

Have you included a lot of your life experiences, even friends, in the plot? I can’t claim to have experienced the level of craziness I put my characters through, but I understand the depths of pain that can bring a person to consider taking their own life.  It is a dark and hurt-filled place to be. I also understand what it’s like to be a teenage female in a situation where you’re looked at as little more than a sexual object of interest to people in positions of power to make your life a living hell. Nothing I experienced at the hands of those meant to love me but it still wasn’t fun to endure.

Some of us at the book club have already finished reading it, and we loved it.
