Author Interview – Hudson Owen

at 4:00 AM

Who is your favorite author?

I’d like to say Shakespeare.  Shakespeare has stood as a beacon and bulwark of English and Western values, and of poetry in an often anti-poetical culture.  You always get your dose of poesy when you deal with Willy S.  He’s too big to be bullied or kicked around by politics.  He will outlast the present age.

What book genre of books do you prefer?

Poetry and literary fiction.  That’s what I write, in addition to essays, plays and screenplays.

What book should everybody read at least once?

I’m going to surprise myself and say the King James Bible.  It’s the one book from the English Renaissance that stands beside the collected works of Shakespeare.  Regardless of your personal beliefs, it is central to understanding Western civilization, and beautifully written..

What do you hope your obituary will say about you?

I hope it gets spelled correctly.

Location and life experiences can really influence writing, tell us where you grew up and where you now live?

I was born in Buffalo, NY in 1946, which makes me a genuine, first generation Baby Boomer.  I grew up in Wilmington, Delaware, and have lived in Brooklyn, NY for many years.  My observations in Brooklyn form the basis of my essay “Brooklyn, Migrating South,” included in ESSAYS OF CONCERN.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

I don’t know where inspiration comes from.  The breath of a hummingbird?   A conversation, movie, book, might trigger an idea for a book or a poem..

Do you plan to publish more books?

Yes.
