Author Interview - David Jester @DavidJester

at 9:00 AM

What was the hardest part about writing this book? This book was a pleasure to write from beginning to end. It didn’t take long and I really got into it. I think the hardest part was working out who the killer was. I tend not to plot out the book before I write it, I prefer not to know what happens, otherwise it can become tedious. You don’t want to know the entire plot before you read a book or you’ll lose interest in it, for me the same applies to writing it.

How do you promote this book? I don’t do much to promote the books. I try to get as much exposure as I can and I will try to promote it through social networks and Kindle sites, but there are very few methods that actually work. I have had plenty of success In the past with other books, but I’m not really sure what I did to achieve it.

Will you write others in this same genre? I will definitely do more books on the “community” theme. I loved writing both Evergreen and Grastik’s Plastic Princess in that style. I also enjoy the serial killer theme, so I’ll no doubt attempt another story like that again.

How much of the book is realistic? I spent a lot of time researching the Gypsy communities. And by that I mean I watched a lot of Channel 4 documentaries. But I think I gave them a fair rap. They’re good people and their way of life fascinates me.

What are your goals as a writer? I want to earn a decent living and keep on writing books that people enjoy. It’s a very good feeling to log into Twitter or Facebook and see messages from people who loved your book. I spent ten years writing for myself, collecting rejection slips from agents eager to brush me from the slush pile, so it’s amazing to open my work up to so many people.

Who is your favorite author and why? Philip K Dick. I love his style. I love his humor. I love his dystopian worlds. I love that he was so prolific as a writer. I don’t write science fiction, it’s one of the few genres I haven’t written, but I also read very little science fiction that wasn’t written by him.

Can we expect any more books from you in the future? Loads more. I’m hoping to get at least another 3 titles out this year.

Have you started another book yet? I actually have a few on the go. Two comedies, one horror and one anthology.

Are you reading any interesting books at the moment? Bill Bryson (one of my literary heros) and Stephen King’s Under the Dome.

What contributes to making a writer successful? I think a lot of it is luck. You need a good book, a good cover and a good synopsis, but if you don’t have a huge advertising budget then when it comes to getting noticed, it’s all about luck.
