Chapter 1

“Jason, wake up” I yelled for the hundredth time. For the hundredth and one time he stirred in the bed mumbling, “Five more minutes.” He had stayed up Thursday night to watch Friday the 13th, Part Six. When I told him to cut off his new television at 12:00 am because he had an appointment with his probation officer at 9:00 am, he mumbled as the masked Jason on television cut up some poor white woman after having her screaming and running for ten minutes, “Five more minutes.” Jason was famous for his five more minutes. Mama said that he was born five days late and he’d probably be late for his own funeral. But I was determined that I wasn’t going to be late for school this morning. So, after I turned the slab bacon strips in the frying pan, I politely went into the refrigerator and took out the pitcher of cold water and threw it on him. He gave a yell which woke up Mama and I’m sure a few dead people. Mama came out of our bedroom running and screaming, “What’s the matter, Jay?” That’s what she calls him. Jay, which is short for jaybird cause he ain’t got much sense. He is nineteen and six feet two, which means he’s too old to be whining over a little cold water.

“Why you do that to him, Loresha?”

“Cause she’s crazy, Mama.” He used his pointer to circle his head.

I went into the kitchen and started beating two eggs for my breakfast. Me crazy? I didn’t steal a bucket of subway tokens from a subway station and then try to sell them outside the same station. He’s the one that has to appear in court every month to show that he’s making progress in a GED program and working for PAL as a youth aide. I go to regular school. I’m in the eleventh grade. I ain’t got to report to anyone except Mama Police.

Mama Police entered the kitchen and picked up a slice of bacon. She slammed the cabinet door after pulling down a cup. I didn’t say anything to her. I knew she didn’t want me to remind her that her job interview was at ten o’clock. I just scraped my eggs onto my plate because the look on her face said that she was not in a friendly mood. The faucet water thundered into the coffee pot.

“Why must everyone wake when you wake up, Loresha?”

Chasing the Lost by Bob Mayer

The man blinked. “Old Doc Cleary owns that land. You related to him?”

“No.” And why Old Doc Cleary had deeded it to his mother was a question that Chase was going to find an answer to. It was a double lot, a little over three acres, stretching from Brams Point Road in front, across a hundred yards of scattered palmettos and scrub to the house, and then a short, sloping backyard of dying grass. It ended at a two-foot-high steel sea wall and a hard-packed beach whose width depended on the tide, and beyond that was the Intracoastal Waterway.

“No one can live there,” the man said. “The house is—”

“I live here now,” Chase cut him off.

“I’ll give you two million for the lot. And the house, even though it isn’t worth shit since the storm put that tree down on it. Hell, it wasn’t much of a house to start with. Have to raze that piece of crap, anyway.”

Out of the corner of his eye, Chase could still see the woman. Long, lean legs. Tanned. Perhaps a dancer. His mind went back beyond Sylvie; she reminded him vaguely of images of his mother, a dancer too, the memory from his hazy childhood. She stood where the gravel driveway met pavement, not hiding her interest about what was going on in the slightest. The kid, however, had become bored, and was peddling away down the street.

“I said two million,” the man repeated.

“Heard you,” Chase said. “Not interested.”

“Listen, you motherfucker, take the money or I’ll—”

Chase made up the ground between the two of them in less than three seconds, in which time the man brought the gun up and aimed it. Chase clamped his hand on the man’s wrist and twisted, the gun falling to the ground with a clatter. He shoved the man back and away from the weapon.

That should have been it, but the fire-plug guy dropped his beer, grabbed a golf club from one of the bags in the trunk, and came forward. In a smooth movement, Chase went to one knee, scooping up the gun, cocking it, flipping off the safety and aiming it right between the man’s eyes. The man froze, eyes wide, club over his head.

“Good boy,” Chase said. “Down.” The man lowered the club and backed up.

Author Interview – Sherrie Cronin

How often do you write? And when do you write? Because I work almost fulltime I have to be fairly disciplined about writing. I have Thursday’s off, and I basically write all day Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. It helps me right at the start of a novel to draw up a straw man schedule, and I’ve done it now all four times. I know that each book in 46. Ascending is going to be about 120,000 words and that I write about 4000 words of raw first draft in a day if I have the research done and can stay focused. I literally get out a calendar and plop the total expected word count on every Thursday, Saturday and Sunday between the end of my research phase and when the first draft of the book will be done, with a few days pulled out for travel and family events and with a couple of random “shit happens” breaks scheduled. I’m a pretty goal oriented person, and having this calendar to guide me gets me there.

Sometimes it’s so hard to keep at it – What keeps you going? I’m not sure what would have happened if I had simply written a novel and then tried to write a second one, but I think that it would have been really difficult to move on and stay motivated. What made all the difference for me was that this always was six stories woven together and if I wrote one story then I had to write them all. So I keep going because I’m not done yet.

What do you hope people will take away from your writing? How will your words make them feel? It’s very important to me that when a reader finishes my book, she or he feels like they have gotten something for the time they spent. Enjoyment, of course. But also I hope to give the reader information, and new ideas and new ways of looking at things. My books do end happily, or at least mostly that way, because I also want my readers to feel lighter and more hopeful when they finish my books.

What movie do you love to watch? This is goofy, but I have an odd old movie that I will watch repeatedly. It’s a Bill Murray thing called “Groundhog Day” and I just love the concept of getting to do something over and over until you finally get it right.  I mean life is that way, isn’t it? I even watched it in Spanish, trying to learn to speak better. It was a good movie for that because they keep repeating the same words.

Are you a city slicker or a country lover? Country. I love to visit cities. I love their diversity and entertainment and great food and all the energy, but in the end I want to be able to go home to peace and my garden and my front porch and fresh air.

Hindsight

“I am hurtling eight stories to the pavement. There’s a bullet in my left shoulder and another chewing through my lung. I am going to die.” – Shirley O’Shea

When Shirley got out of prison three years ago, he committed himself to being there for his sister, Haley, and his aunt, Winnie–the only family he has left. Then he met Isaac, a man with connections to his grandfather and to the IRA. Isaac said he owed Shirley’s family a favor: deliver a package and get some money. But things are never that simple, are they? What should have been an easy drop-off blows Shirley’s world apart. Now he’s on the run, a continent away from those he loves, trying to figure out what he’s gotten himself into, who he can trust and how far he’s willing to go in order to keep his family safe.

But Shirley has a few skeletons of his own banging on the closet doors, and the hinges are starting to come off.

Pirate Trials: Hung by the Neck Until Dead – Ken Rossignol

Genre – Non Fiction

Rating – PG

Free until 31 August 2013

Second in the series of Pirate Trials from news reports of the days and actual trial documents. NOTE: This is not a pirate romance novel or a Johnny Depp adventure of fantasy and make believe, but the details and drama from first person confessions and details of the charges against real pirates. This is not Hollywood. The real words of one pirate issued to a crowd who were waiting for his execution with his admontion to others to avoid the temptations brought on by hard liquor might be a little too much for some souls.  Parental guidance is the way to go for children and some adults need to avoid the tedious drama of this non-fiction and retreat to the safe haven of romance novels with pirates who are simply "hung" and not "hanged".
Join this bloodthirsty crew of pirates on ships which includes the dying declarations of the most brutal and vicious deeds ever set upon innocent civilians and merchant ship crews. The Demon Rum is cited as the chief cause by one pirate for his awful and murderous acts. Their day of reckoning came when they faced their final day of judgement when captured in Spain.
When a crew of passengers leapt from their disguise to overpower a steamship after it left New York on a trip to Portland, Maine, the pirates claimed the ship in the name of the Confederacy, at the height of the Civil War! Learn what happened to the ship and the pirates.
