Chapter 37

‘Gramps wasn’t around anymore. Successful industrialists don’t have time for their daughters. My mother had her hands full with the boys. Teenagers crave attention. That’s all I was doing. It turned out I was quite normal. I finally grew up. Sports were helpful.’

He was as intrigued with her as ever. ‘What kind of sports?’

‘Gymkhana horse riding, till I was 15, and then some board surfing, on the odd occasion, and then, more recently, board sailing. I love to be at one with nature.’ She flicked back her hair and looked up at the sun.

‘So,’ he said in response, ‘we both know how to ride a horse – that’s a start isn’t it?’

‘Yeah,’ I guess so, she replied, ‘but I’d rather play golf.’

‘I’d be delighted if you’d play with me,’ he stated enthusiastically. ‘What did you do when you were “finished” at that “finishing school” of yours?’

‘I’ve told you,’ she answered: ‘my old man wanted me “barefoot and pregnant” in the kitchen next door – he thought it was time I settled down. We had a hell of a fight, but I had Guido on my side, and my mother finally came to the party and supported me.

‘I enrolled in a journalism course at Texas U, in Austin. I did quite well. My old man finally acknowledged my existence by coming to my graduation ceremony. And then our relationship became an armed truce, when I “informed” him I’d decided to go out on my own.’ Using her index and middle fingers, she drew quotation marks in the air, around the word “informed”.

‘That wasn’t his idea of how a good Italian woman should conduct herself. I basically told him, “Go fuck yourself!”, but I used more diplomatic language – as they taught me at finishing school. He finally came to realise he’d been a failure as a father, and backed off. From time to time, he still dangles my trust fund in my face, in the hope he can make me see reason and live my life according to his paternal script.’

‘Right,’ Luke acknowledged. ‘And your mother?’

‘Mum died when I was 20, a week before my 21st-birthday party. That rug was also pulled out from under me, and it was the last straw, as far as I was concerned. That’s when I moved to San Francisco to start living my own life properly.

‘That’s also why I wanted to know your views about gay marriage. Like Sydney, San Fran’s got a large gay community, and I’m lucky enough to have a lot of gay friends.’

His ‘naughty streak’ surfaced again. ‘And if you come to live in Australia among the “large gays”?’

She smiled, but was clearly fixated on wrapping up her story. ‘Some of them might miss me.’
‘Did you struggle to get a job?’

‘No,’ she answered, ‘not really. A few doors were opened to me because I topped my class and was the daughter of Louis Marchetti.’

Luke imagined the opening doors, and indulged in a quick fantasy about banging his boys up against her open doors . . . ‘So,’ he remarked, ‘he wasn’t entirely a waste of rations . . . Hang on a second: did you just say you topped your class?’

She had a palpable air of relief that she’d finally told her story. ‘Look, Luke, he’s not really a bad guy; it’s just he’s been hanging on to his old values in the modern world. I’m convinced that somewhere deep inside him, he’s just as sad as I am that we don’t have a relationship. I’m his only daughter. Maybe, if you and I finally get together, it’ll serve as an ice breaker.’

‘You topped your class?’ he persisted.

‘Yes,’ she replied, with a trace of impatience. ‘So what?

He considered his next question. ‘Can I ask you something personal?’

‘Sure,’

Getting Personal with #Author Merry Farmer @merryfarmer20 #romance #mustread

How do you feel about self-publishing?  I think it’s the best thing that’s happened to the publishing industry in a long time.  Not only is it the perfect publishing vehicle for people like me who are independent and love the entrepreneurial challenge, I believe it keeps the traditional publishing industry on its toes.  Everyone has had to rethink what they’re doing in the last few years, which will only be good for readers in the long run.  And authors as well.  I believe the whole publishing industry is becoming more author-centric.
What does love mean to you?  Love means being there to support someone, to respect them and help them reach their goals.  Can you imagine what a beautiful world this would be if we were all more concerned with looking out for the other guy as well as fulfilling our own needs?  That’s what love is all about.
What social issues interest you the most?  Anything that has to do with child welfare and education.  I hate to think of children being bullied or worse.  I also believe that a good education is the most important gift you can give to a child.  That and books, which are sort of the same thing.
When you get free time on the internet or you go to the library – what do you want to read about?  Lately I’ve been really interested in psychology.  I’m fascinated by how the brain works and the advances that are being made in neuroscience.  It’s especially cool to read about the differences between men and women, and between introverts and extroverts.  And, of course, I love reading romance novels.
Do you find the time to read?  If you’re a writer, you have to find the time to read.  It’s homework.  Like Stephen King says, if you can’t find the time to read, then you don’t have the time or the tools to write.  I try to read a little bit each night after getting in bed.
Last book you purchased? Tell us about it.  The last book I bought was Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking, by Susan Cain.  It’s a fascinating look at how we live in a society that values extroverts and tells introverts there’s something wrong with them, but the truth is that introversion is just another way of thinking.  I’m learning a lot about myself and how I interact with the world.
Who do you admire?  I really admire Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani girl who was shot for her outspokenness over girls receiving an education.  She was incredibly brave to stand up for what was right in a dangerous environment in the first place, and her perseverance and dedication to continuing her message is amazing.
What is your favorite quality about yourself?  My creativity and the subsequent ability to never be bored.
What is your least favorite quality about yourself?  Probably my insecurity and the way I constantly compare myself to others, especially other writers.  Bleh!
What is your favorite quote, by whom, and why?  I have so many!  I think right now it’s that classic Ernest Hemmingway quote, “The first draft of anything is s$@t.”  Mostly because it’s so, so true and I’m experiencing it right now.
What are you most proud of accomplishing so far in your life?  I’m proud of the fact that in spite of how difficult it is and how many roadblocks stand in my way, I’ve managed to achieve my lifelong dream of being a published writer.  Now I’m moving on to working to accomplish my new dream of supporting myself with my writing.
What is your favorite color?  There are some really awesome shades of green out there!
What is your favorite food?  Salmon that is cooked and seasoned just right.
What’s your favorite place in the entire world?  I would have to say in my bed, under layers of covers, when it’s cold outside.  Company is nice, but even when I’m alone it’s bliss!
How has your upbringing influenced your writing?  I was never told no when it came to anything creative.  We are all pretty creative in our family and have supported each other, no matter what we wanted to try.  I had a pretty rough childhood though, but those strong, mostly negative emotions have helped me to writer deeper characters.

#SexualAbuse #Excerpt from The Invisible Sorority by Ty Johnson-Anderson @invisible_soror

at 9:00 AM 0 comments
I stand here for all survivors of sexual assault to make our struggle evident. I am starting a movement—the “I Am Not Invisible” movement. Why? Because it’s needed. Some estimates state that as many as one in four women will be raped or sexually assaulted sometime during their lives. That makes them members of our not-so-exclusive sorority.
We walk among society faceless, mainly because of our own shame. We fake our bright smiles-behind them are our lifeless eyes. We are lost in the crowd. But not for long. It’s our time-our time to step out of the shadows, and finally make the world take notice of this horrid epidemic.
I too am a survivor. Notice I didn’t say “victim.” I was violated by a boyfriend, although initially I didn’t categorize what had happened to me that way. More on that later.
As in all healthy relationships, we had sex-lots of consensual, teenage, lust-filled sex. But we also had a lot of non-consensual sex. While we were living together, I would often wake up to him having sex with me.
In my heart of hearts, I knew this FELT wrong. But I had never been in any other sexual relationship, so I had no reference- no handbook to tell me what was healthy. As with many parents, my mother never shared her sexual exploits with me or talk to me about my role in a sexual relationship, albeit not her fault, but a societal fault. So, being a naïve teenager, I thought maybe this was normal, this is what girlfriends do.
My thoughts as it was happening were; if you had sex with a person once, you had to continue to give it to them, right? I mean, we were in a relationship. So I shut up and I took it. For a year, I took it! In that year, I lost count of how many times I “engaged” in nonconsensual sex-nights with him rolling off me and me rolling over and crying myself to sleep.
Like many survivors, I suffered in silence. I was jaded . . . conflicted. On one hand, I had a boyfriend who took me out, opened doors, showered me with the kind of affection you’d expect from a lover. On the other hand, I had a secret, a deep, dark secret.
It couldn’t be rape. That’s what I kept thinking. In fact, at that time, I wore a smile every day. The only time I cried was when he was on top of me. But . . . it couldn’t be rape. I didn’t say “no.” You have to do that, right? I didn’t fight him off. You should do that too, right? I thought these things were the truth.
As children we are taught by our parents and the media that rape is something that a stranger does to you in a dark alley. I kept a wary eye out for “those” guys, but my antenna was not tuned to the rapist in my bed. My guy, who by day was a dream, became “that guy,” at night. He wasn’t violent, maybe because I didn’t resist his advances or fight back. So again, it couldn’t be rape, could it?
Let me tell you that any sex that is engaged in without consent is rape. Your lack of fighting back is not giving your consent. Your failure to scream, “No, please don’t do this!” is not giving your consent.
…
I must have a guardian angel because although they weren’t the best people for me to be in a relationship with, they weren’t pure evil either.
…
I still have trust issues. I still have intimacy issues. I still have communication issues. My journey is still not over. And I’m sure your journey, whether you’re at the beginning or in the midst of it, is ongoing.

Lethal Journey by Kim Cresswell @kimcresswell

Chapter Three

Detective Eric Brennan sat at his usual table and sipped the night’s beverage of choice—a cola. In Chunkers Bar and Grill loud pointless chatter overpowered the ‘80s rock and roll band on stage.

The last week was a blur. Every waking hour he pounded the streets in search of his father’s killer.

Eric knew every detail of the shooters face, but not the kid’s name. He’d heard from one of his informant’s, the kid was a young tough-guy looking to be made—a “cugine” ready to make his mark into New York’s most influential crime network, the Valdina family. As part of his induction into the mob family, the asshole had already killed a low-life rival family member and Eric and his father were working the homicide case when they got a tip.

That steamy June evening had started like any typical bust. Within minutes after Eric and his father arrived at the warehouse, dozens of DEA agents secured the perimeter. Eric entered the warehouse first, his father followed. Amid the stench of mildew and dust, the first pop of an automatic echoed within the barren walls.

They were ambushed.

His father, a veteran with twenty-three years on the force never saw the shots coming. Eric threw his body against his father in hopes of shielding him. It was too late. Instead Eric witnessed his father’s face, the sickening whitish blue tint that came with death...

While Pete checked in with the precinct, Eric shifted in the chair. His left knee still burned where the bullet had grazed his leg. He rubbed the scar, a permanent reminder of a drug bust gone bad. Very bad.

“Hey, Brennan.” Pete threw a twenty-dollar bill on the table and downed the last swallow of his beer. “Come on. I think we got a lead.”

Outside on West 35th Street, a full moon peeked through the clouds. Jagged streaks of lightning ignited the sky as rain sprinkled against Eric’s leather jacket. He lit a cigarette and leaned against his white pick-up truck parked in front of Chunkers.

Pete smirked. “Man, I thought you quit.”

#Author Joshua Silverman on Finding Time to Read @jg_silverman #Fantasy #MustRead

at 9:30 AM 0 comments
Image of Joshua Silverman
How do you feel about self-publishing?
I think for the most part, self-published authors tend to sacrifice quality for cost. They don’t think spending a few thousand dollars on a good editor is worth it, hoping their friend, who was an English major, is good enough. Or they buy stock photo images for their book covers instead of something custom. It’s one of the reasons self-published authors rarely make more than $500 a year by selling their books. On the other hand, if you want to publish your book just to say you’ve published something and not try to make it a career or business, then self-publishing is a great, cost effective way to accomplish that.
Do you find the time to read?
Absolutely. I think every author needs to at least read 12 books a year, at a minimum for your own education. There have been many times when I’ve read a passage and thought, ‘Wow, I really liked how the author phrased that’ or described something. Reading is learning for authors. Just this year alone, I’ve read 70 books.
How did you come up with the title?
Each title of the Legends of Amun Ra series is chosen with the specific purpose of highlighting the theme of the book. The Soul of the World’s theme is air and the name ‘the soul of the world’ is a Greek mythological reference to the god of air, Aether.
How did you develop your plot and characters?
I usually try to put my characters in realistic situations which force them to make challenging decisions. It pushes them to the limit of their growth if I make them go outside their comfort zone.
Who designed the cover?
The cover and logo of book 1, The Emerald Tablet, was designed by Reflection Studios. The silver logo of book 2, The Soul of the World, was designed by artist Joshua Ballze.
Did you learn anything from writing this book and what was it?
Of course. With each book I’ve grown as a writer. Book 1, The Emerald Tablet, focused too much on exposition and internal thoughts of the characters. So I learned from those critiques and penned book 2, The Soul of the World, with an eye towards action and dialogue. If the characters wouldn’t say it, I tried to cut it out. Surprisingly, when you edit out a lot of heavy-handed exposition, the flow of the book picks up tremendously because it’s all dialogue and action.
How much of the book is realistic?
There are aspects that are inspired by history. Such as in book 2, The Soul of the World, the character Axios mentions the Serpent Column in Plataea District of the Thothian Empire. However, a Serpent Column really exists in Istanbul, Turkey and was created to commemorate the Greek defeat of the Persian Empire at the Battle of Plataea in 479 BCE.
How important do you think villains are in a story?
They’re just as important as the hero. I really try hard to not make my characters one dimensional. In fact, it’s one of the things I get complimented on the most, how three dimensional my characters are and how realistic they can be. I think authors need to spend as much time thinking about their villains as their heroes.
Do you have to travel much concerning your book(s)?
I travel once every few months to a convention or a signing. Hopefully, as the series becomes more popular, I’ll be doing more traveling.
Can we expect any more books from you in the future?
Yes, tons. There are 7 books in the Legends of Amun Ra series, 1 book in the expanded universe, three more books coming in a trilogy and I have a second trilogy planned in paranormal/urban fantasy.
Have you started another book yet?
I’m writing two books currently: book 3 of Legends of Amun Ra and an untitled piece set in the legends expanded universe. I’m also outlining 3 more books.
Do you have any advice for writers?
Don’t be so gung ho to finish your novel as fast as possible. We live in a world where quick, low cost publishing is only a few clicks away. But that doesn’t mean you need to publish Saturday what you wrote Friday.
When you wish to end your career, stop writing, and look back on your life, what thoughts would you like to have? In terms of writing, I’d like to think someone learned something from my series, whether it’s something historical, mythological, or just about humanity. I want people to continue growing and challenging themselves.
1175648_514024498686135_1699853908_n
The ancient powers lost to Potara have returned. The Brotherhood of the Black Rose rises to bring Thoth into disorder. And, while the Brotherhood reclaims their power, chaos reigns among the survivors. Six individuals have emerged from the aftermath struggling for control over their lives and a divided land. Kem and Shirin, who abolished the five thousand year reign of the Amun Priests, rule from the golden throne of the Oracle’s Chair in the Hall of the Nine. Dio and Axios struggle to piece together a resistance worthy to challenge the ancient magic which resides in the Great Temple of Amun, and Leoros and Atlantia try to remain true to their hearts and their cause despite tragedy.
But when the Book of Breathings is discovered, the path to immortality is revealed. Leoros and Kem race to capture the Soul of the World unaware of the challenges awaiting them. This time, the gods themselves will intervene.
In a tale where boys become men and girls become women, where treachery and deception are around every corner, and where primeval mysticism finds its way back from the grave, victory is reserved for neither the good nor the evil, but the powerful.
