How to Create a Great Work Area for Inspiration

by Sarah Martinez

I just recently redid my office. I posted pictures on twitter and Facebook. The biggest thing I did was to put all my books along one wall so I could see them, as if I were in a library, and I put away most of the piles that were on my desk. I find empty desk space very soothing, while the clutter of the piled up manuscripts and sticky notes makes me anxious and strangles the creative urge. To avoid that I was moving all over the house, setting up shop at one end of the dining room table, or even out on the patio when there was sunshine. (I still do that when I can. I love my outdoor office!) Now I have a space where I still know where everything is but can now work on one thing at a time.

I also got rid of my modern L shaped desk and brought in old wooden furniture that reminded me of childhood and called up the romantic image of the writer. All I need now is that old Royal typewriter for the corner!

The last thing is to do real work in the new space. No matter how much I rearrange, I always go back to the places where I remember having good work days. So the important thing to do is to put in the actual time getting the work done.
