Are there any books you really don’t enjoy?
I don’t particularly care for horror. That genre renders the main characters helpless in the face of adversity. I prefer characters that face challenges and overcome them.
Did you have to research genetic engineering? How do you weave that thread through the book’s plot?
Genetic engineering is current an important topic in our society and humanity faced difficult choices as it develops over the course of the next century. In Midshipman Henry Gallant, genetic engineering plays an influential role in the background but it is cast against another important innovation that also may prove a future threat: Artificial Intelligence.
What is hardest – getting published, writing or marketing?
The process of writing has always been my favorite part of the process; I enjoy creating the ideas and words. I’ve never had great difficulty find a publisher. I’ve had books published by large book publishers: John Wiley & Sons and Addison-Wesley (see www.hpeteralesso.com ). I decided to try self-publishing my latest novel. Of course, the nicest part of self-publishing is that the author makes a most cooperative publisher.
Marketing has always been the most difficult aspect. Getting the right venue to properly promote your book in a cost effective manner requires considerable trial and error. Every author feels his work will do well if only…, if only more readers can find it, …if only it is fairly reviewed, …if only it is prominently displayed, …if only word of mouth can reach the right readership.
Do you plan to publish more books?
Absolutely! I enjoy seeing an idea come into existence and flourish.
How do you write – lap top, pen, paper, in bed, at a desk?
I use a lap top and word processor for my writing along with an Excel spreadsheet for outlining. Recently I have been using Dragon Naturally Speaking, a speech-to-text program which I have found to be very effective.
