Author Interview – Ben Galley

at 6:00 AM

Why did you self-publish?

Because for the first time in history, it’s a viable option. Gone are the days of Vanity Publishing, and now we live in a time where, thanks to eBooks and Print On Demand, and eRetailers, we can publish with ease and sell to the world. For me it was a financially viable choice, one that meant I could keep my rights, a greater portion of my royalties, and control.

Do you have any tips for authors looking to self-publish?

I do indeed. Three in fact. Aim high – your books need to be of the highest standard, no matter what the genre or audience. It will help you stand out, make sales, and build a fanbase. Persevere – self-publishing takes time and effort. An income isn’t made overnight. Work hard and understand that everybody is trying to do the same thing as you. Keep at it. And lastly, keep learning – the industry changes daily. You need to keep your finger on the pulse. You can get more advice at my site, Shelf Help, which can be found at www.bengalley.com

What are some of the best tools available today for writers, especially those just starting out?

The best tools for publishing would be Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing, Kobo’s Writing Life, and Amazon’s CreateSpace. For marketing it would be Twitter, Facebook, and Goodreads. For general advice it would be The Alliance of Independent Authors, The Creative Penn, and my own site, www.bengalley.com.

Sometimes it’s so hard to keep at it – What keeps you going?

Knowing that I’m not even close to where I want to be. I have so much left to do, and so many books to write. If I get a day when I just can’t be bothered, I remind myself of what I want to achieve.

When you are not authoring, how do you like to relax?

I have quite a varied lifestyle. I enjoy a spot of Xbox, a lot of reading, scuba diving, surfing, looking after my pet rats, climbing, and of course, quintessential for any Englishman – a few pints down the pub.
