Author Interview – Sheena Binkley

at 1:00 AM

Do you intend to make writing a career?

It’s definitely a dream of mine to make writing a career.

Have you ever had writer’s block? If so, what did you do to about it?

Of course I had writer’s block! I have it right now with my current story, lol! Usually when I have writer’s block, I would take a break for a couple of days to relax and reenergize myself so I could develop more ideas to put on paper. Although I do an outline of events, I have to figure out how it will go in the story, so it takes awhile to find the ideas to put them into motion.

How did you come up with the title?

The title sort of came on a whim. In Love With My Best Friend wasn’t the first title I was going for. I wanted something more original, but at the time, I felt it was fitting because that what the book was about, falling in love with your best friend.

Can you tell us about the main character?

The story centers around Trevor and Camille, best friends who have known each since they were thirteen. While Camille always had feelings for Trevor, Trevor slowly developed the same feelings for Camille throughout their friendship. Camille can be a bit headstrong on some issues, but she can also be someone that hides her emotions because she doesn’t know how the outcome will be. Trevor, on the other hand, can be a bit indecisive on what he wants. It’s evidently when you read the story.

How did you develop your plot and characters?

I developed the plot when I wrote another story, Baker 6, which had a combination of everything from romance to mystery. In fact, In Love With My Best Friend was not the first book I was going to published; it was actually Baker 6, but at the time I felt the book had too much going on, so I decided to opt for a story that had a less drama (supposedly, lol). With the characters, Trevor and Camille were in the story Baker 6, but in that story, they knew each other since they were two. Also, Camille was married. So I took those two characters and developed In Love With My Best Friend. I also took two other characters out of Baker 6, Gerald and Tamara, and changed them to Charles and Tia in In Love With My Best Friend. If anyone read the story chapters of Baker 6 on my blog or Goodreads, you will notice some of the similarities between the two characters.

Who designed the cover?

With the print cover, it was myself along with the publisher who designed the cover (in which will possibly be changed at a later time). With the ebook cover, Melody Simmons of Ebook Indie Covers designed the cover. She also designed the cover to my next book, Our Love.

Who is your publisher?

Outskirts Press.

What was the hardest part about writing this book?

The hardest part was whether I wanted to put love scenes in the book. Although there was sexual tension between the two, I didn’t know if I wanted the two to cross the line sexually, that’s why I decided not to. That and whether I wanted the book to be longer.

How much of the book is realistic?

In Love With My Best Friend is strictly fiction. I never experienced this in my life nor known anyone who did. I really hope that whoever read the story and have been in a similar situation will find the book relatable. But there will be other stories that I will publish in the future that will have some realistic elements.

Have you started another book yet?

Yes, I have. My second book is titled, Our Love, and it’s a Young Adult romance. It a story between two individuals trying to find their way as they embark not only a new relationship, but finding their path in life and the experiences that they faced upon meeting each other. It’s a sweet story, but there are some events that may be a shock to readers when they do read it. The book will be available in November, but it may be released earlier.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

A New York Times Best Seller who still loves to write.
