Author Interview – Christina Smith

at 3:30 AM

What is hardest – getting published, writing or marketing? I haven’t been traditionally published because it is extremely difficult, so I’d say that was, but it’s also hard to market your book, especially when I’d rather just hold up in my room and write.

What marketing works for you? So far the best I’d say was advertising at bookbub and Ereader news today. I had a surge of sales without any advertising once, and I made the top 100 but I have no idea how that happened.

Do you find it hard to share your work? Yes, my writing is personal, when someone doesn’t like it; I feel they are attacking me personally, even though I know I shouldn’t feel that way. I realize everyone has different tastes but it is hard to let that sink in.

Is your family supportive? Do your friends support you? Very. All of them have suffered though my whining when the writing isn’t flowing, and plot ideas, and constant chatter about everything book related. And they never complain to me anyway.

Do you plan to publish more books? Yes, I’ve already published six, and I’m working on the last in the Moon’s Glow series now.

What else do you do to make money, other than write? It is rare today for writers to be full time… That’s all I do actually. I started writing when I was running a small business with my husband. I stayed home and answered the phones, and did the bookwork. We have since closed the business, but I stayed home to write while my husband works. I don’t make a lot, but I help out some.

What other jobs have you had in your life? I worked at a coffee shop (Tim Horton’s), a sub shop (Mr. Submarine) and then at thrift store (Value Village), until I had my first child and then I became a stay at home mom until my husband opened his business. I became his partner, where I answered phones, and did book work.

If you could study any subject at university what would you pick? Literature. I wish I could go back in time and take a different path than what I did.

If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be? Ireland, I would love to go to a pub and just listen to them talk. I love their accents, and the words they use.

How do you write – lap top, pen, paper, in bed, at a desk? Laptop, on my bed, or desk in my room. I don’t have an empty room for an office, unless I want to go to the basement, which I don’t.

How much sleep do you need to be your best? I’ve never counted. But I guess eight.
