Q. What do you consider the most challenging about writing?
A. Endurance. Writing never stops. It is the longest super-marathon you will ever participate in. Before you come to the end of one race, you are preparing for the next. If you’re lucky, maybe you get a brief rest stop before it’s time to continue. And if you’re really lucky, all you want to do is get back in there and do it again and again. That’s when you know you’re a writer.
Q. What contributes to a writer’s success?
A. More incremental and serendipitous effects than can be imagined. But before all of that can happen, a writer has to attend to the basics: craft is important. There must be a sincere, disciplined commitment to learning the tools of our trade. After that, a writer must come to each new writing day because it would be unthinkable to do otherwise. If that isn’t happening for you…
Q. How much of your book is realistic?
A. Everything I write in every story is realistic. Stories that resonate with me, draw me to them, are those stories in which I can feel transference. I want to be moved and taken away on a journey that feels reachable. It doesn’t matter if it’s an action story or pirate story or romance. I want the story to connect to reality rather than fantasy. For me, reality is infinitely more interesting than fantasy.
Q. How many friends does a person need?
A. That depends on the person, I suppose. There is no right or wrong answer to a question like that. I will tell you, in my opinion, if one has two or three people in a lifetime who are true friends, this is indeed a fortunate person.
Q. What is your favorite color?
A. Black currant, like the deep rich color in an elegant bottle of Brunello di Montalcino.
Q. What do you want your obituary to say?
A. Here was a man who understood compromise is a noble deed in all things human, except fidelity to those he loved, loyalty to family and friends and his character.
