Author Interview – Irina Shapiro

at 11:00 PM

How much sleep do you need to be your best?

The more, the better.

Every writer has their own idea of what a successful career in writing is, what does success in writing look like to you?

Of course, it would be wonderful to be a household name and have millions of people read my books, but there are other forms of success.  Having strangers buy my books and enjoy them enough to buy another one or send me an e-mail filled with praise is a dream come true.

It is vital to get exposure and target the right readers for your writing, tell us about your marketing campaign?

Finding your target audience is everything.  I went on Amazon to see what genres the famous authors used to market their books.  I don’t really think of my books as fantasy, but that’s how people who write in the same genre market theirs.  When I think of fantasy, I picture mystical creatures, far-away kingdoms, and epic battles between good and evil.  My books are more historical romance with a twist.

If you could have a dinner party and invite anyone dead or alive, who would you ask?

My guest list would probably be full of creative, passionate people, who left a lasting impact on civilization.  I would invite Leonardo DaVinci, Ernest Hemingway, Arthur Conan Doyle, William Shakespeare, Queen Elizabeth I, and possibly Cleopatra.  Jesus could stop by for dessert, if he felt so inclined.

When you are not writing, how do you like to relax?

I’m a big fan of movies.  I try not to get into any series because then I can’t tear myself away, and end up watching ten episodes in one day, neglecting my children and the world in general.

Do you have any tips on how writers can relax?

Lots of alcohol!
