What inspires you to write and why? The brave men and women who helped shape this country inspire me to write stories that will get others interested in our heritage and learn about the honor and courage that were once a prevalent part of our culture.
What genre are you most comfortable writing? Historical Fiction and Southern Romance
What inspired you to write your first book? I wrote my first novel SHADES OF GRAY because of a desire to teach people that the American Civil War was not about black and white issues, but really was shades of gray. I also wanted to show readers the courage, faith and devotion to duty that helped shape our nation.
What do you consider the most challenging about writing a novel, or about writing in general? Finding the time to sit down and write. There is always “something” else to do.
Do you intend to make writing a career? It never occurred to me until I hit the age of 40 that I could make a living writing. I took the plunge and quit a well-paying job to do final edits on my first novel SHADES OF GRAY, and have never looked back. I currently work a part-time job (as a stagehand), mainly as a way to stay in shape since writing is such a sedentary occupation.
Have you developed a specific writing style? I read so many diaries, letters, obituaries, newspapers from the 19th century, that I think my style is old-fashioned and very Victorian.
Can you share a little of your current work with us? My newest release is Above and Beyond, which hit #1 on Amazon’s bestseller list in Christian Historical Fiction. It shows the role that faith played during the American Civil War.
How did you come up with the title? The title, as with all of my titles, has a double meaning. One meaning is the obvious, going above and beyond the call of duty. The other is more veiled, but becomes apparent as you read the book.
