What marketing works for you? As an indie author it’s important to find ways to market where I get the most bang for the buck. I’ve achieved the greatest results by combining two things: KDP Select free promotions, which I advertise on sites with large numbers of subscribers (like Bookbub or Ereader News Today); and blogger interviews, guest posts, or reviews in conjunction with a giveaway on blogs with large numbers of followers. I frankly don’t know if I’ve ever sold a book through Twitter or Facebook, but I participate in all kinds of social media to get my name out there and build my author platform. While book signings are fun, they typically don’t give me enough exposure to readers in my genre.
In what genre are you most comfortable writing? I love this question. I started out thinking I was going to write a legal thriller because I practiced law for many years, and that’s what I loved to read. The funny thing is, I started writing several novels and lost interest halfway through. It wasn’t until I hosted a number of book clubs for middle school kids that I realized how much I love YA. And, it wasn’t until I began writing YA that I realized how much fun the science fiction/fantasy genre can be. In my opinion, YA literature is much purer emotionally because it doesn’t get bogged down with all the baggage adult characters carry with them. The real surprise, though, has come with the realization that a large percentage of my readers are adults who enjoy the sci-fi and romance elements of my books. I’ve pretty much stopped telling people I write YA and instead say I write science fiction/fantasy with a young protagonist.
What contributes to making a successful writer? A great work ethic, an extensive vocabulary, a thick skin, and an enduring sense of humor.
What book should everyone read at least once? The Prophet by Kahil Gibran.
Who is your favorite author? Well, I’d love to be cool and say it’s Chimimanda Ngozi Adichie, but the truth is Mark Twain is my all time favorite. Dude still makes me laugh and cry!
What is your favorite quote? “There are two great days in a person’s life, the day we are born and the day we discover why.” ~William Barclay
Can you share a little about your work with us? To date I’ve written and published TRANSCENDER: First-Timer and STREAMING STARS, Books 1 and 2 of the Transcender Trilogy. Currently, I’m finishing up my initial draft of Book 3, ILLUMINOSITY, which I expect to release in late 2013. The books cross several genres and can most accurately be described as Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Paranormal Romance. My MC, Jaden Beckett, is a Connecticut teenager who is still recovering from the sudden death of her mother, when she discovers she possesses an amazing gift—the ability to travel to parallel worlds.
